If you’re spending this New Years Eve in New England, you’re in luck. All across the region, there are many fantastic opportunities to discover. Here are several of the biggest parties to bring in 2019 in style.
First Night Boston
Monday, Dec. 31 at noon, Boston
Each year, Copley Square and the Back Bay come alive with ice sculptures, light displays, live music, and more. The fun starts at noon and lasts all day. At Boston Public Library, check out performances by Puppet Showplace Theatre and ImprovBoston. At 5:30 p.m., catch a figure skating show at the Boston Common Frog Pond starring Olympic figure skater Ashley Wagner. Throughout the night in Copley Square, enjoy live performances from artists including Flight of Fire, Single by Sunday, and Chadwick Stokes and the Pintos. Don’t miss the fireworks over Boston Common at 7 p.m. and at midnight over Boston Harbor, along with pyrotechnics and a light show at Copley Square.
Downtown Countdown in Bangor, Maine
Monday, Dec. 31 at 11 a.m., Bangor, Maine
Bangor’s Downtown Countdown ends with its own special ball dropping at midnight: a beach ball at West Market Square! Leading up to the countdown, you’ll find an animal show and parade at the Maine Discovery Museum, a story slam at West Market Square Coffee House, live musical performances, karaoke, mini-golf, and planetarium shows at the Bangor Public Library, and performances by the Tough End String Band at The Rock & Art Shop.
First Night Hartford in Hartford, Conn.
Monday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m., Hartford, Connecticut
During First Night Hartford, you’ll have opportunities to ride a train, carousel, or horse-drawn wagon. Go ice skating at Bushnell Park, experience a dance party on Trinity Street, or mosey over to the Connecticut Science Center or Wadsworth Athenaeum for even more special activities. For kids, Connecticut’s Old State House on Main Street invites families to tour the building, make crafts, and meet costumed interpreters. Finish off the night with two fireworks shows in Bushnell Park, at 6 p.m. and midnight.
One Providence NYE Celebration in Providence
Monday, Dec. 31 at 7 p.m., Waterplace Park, Providence
This year, Providence hosts its first-ever ball drop at the One Providence NYE Celebration at Waterplace Park. Festivities begin at 7 p.m. with a laser light show and food and beverages from local food trucks. But at 11:55 p.m., the countdown to the ball drop begins, with fireworks at midnight. If you’d rather stay indoors, Skyline at Waterpark hosts a black tie gala and rooftop celebration, featuring food, champagne, and a performance by Aerosmith tribute band Aeromyth. Buy tickets here.
